tinker, tailor, soldier, spy and other odds and ends

At this months meeting, several items were up for thought and in need for your input. I will present these in order of their next occurrence. As always, we are asking for your thoughts on any and/or all of the following items.

You can always e-mail me directly or contact any member of the board.

Item One: I am so happy to announce that we are re-starting, beginning in October; our Caregiver Breakfast. This occurs the Saturday morning after our regular monthly meeting. So, if all goes according to plan, the relaunch should happen on October 6th at 9:00 AM. These has usually taken place at the Good Egg located at 4775 E. Grant Rd. (N. Swan Rd.). [See details and map here.] Rhonda is the contact person for this.

Item Two: Our November meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November the 6th. This is also Election Day. We took a vote and most everyone indicated that they would like to keep our regular meeting for that date. If you have concerns, please let us know and trust me, it’s OK if you come a little late. Everyone understands.

Item Three: We have a date and time for the 2013 Gaslight Fund Raising Event. The date and time are Saturday the 20th day of April at 6:00PM. Details are forthcoming and Michele  is the contact person for this.[See details and map here.]

As I stated above, we want to hear any questions/concerns/suggestions and input on these or any other items you may have thought about and then just did not pass along for any reason. This is YOUR group and WE want you to have a happy, positive and active experience.

That pretty much provides the ‘bailing of water’ in our little life boat for this month. I will be adding details to the web site as I become aware of them, so feel free to drop me an e-mail and let me know of any additional information I need to post.

Be strong.

MONDAYS 1:30*-2:30

An we shall have an interlude:

Hello Everyone,

As always, I trust and pray that you are all well and of good cheer.

The usual matter of course would have me reminding you that our next monthly meeting was upon us. This time and e-mail, is in opposite desire. Next Tuesday the 3rd of July…….a night off. No meeting, no gathering.

With summer time atop us with its oppressive heat, I hope we are all remembering to take care of ourselves and our charges. Please make sure you are staying cool and drinking water (more so than normal).

It is that time of year when we celebrate the Nation’s Independence. I hope each of you have a sincere desire to make and show tribute to our wonderful country. For those of us blessed by birth and to our brothers and sisters who are here by declaration of decision……Happy 4th of July. There hopefully will be food and family joviality for us all. In my previous life as an adolescent male; found memories of watermelon seed spitting contest come flooding into my mind…..wait, I suppose that’s ‘TMI.’ Oh well, my cousins and I had wonderful times running around the yard on this holiday. Whatever your memories bring to the forefront of your mind; I hope it is as pleasant and happy as mine are. While hot dogs, hamburgers and home made ice cream are a thing of the past for me, I sincerely desire you get to enjoy a favorite item of consumption.

If weather and ‘dry’ conditions allow, may you find the time to go out in the evening of the 4th, hear some good uplifting music which brings national pride and a deep desire to be in a marching band to your ears and that ohhhh ahhhhh and wow’s are heard throughout the land.

Eat well, stay safe and enjoy the show. Also, if you have the desire; help the economy and buy a couch. LOL :: snicker ::

Oh, are you kidding, like I wouldn’t have an historical perspective to send your way; I leave you with the inclination of John Adams and his desires for the “second day of July”:

The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not. (The Book of Abigail and John: Selected Letters of the Adams Family, 1762-1784, Harvard University Press, 1975, 142).

Now, before anyone make quarry of the July 2nd date; please take note of the surroundings and dates revolving around the taking of votes and such early political intrigue regarding our 4th of July Celebration.

With this reminder that there is NO meeting this month, we have interlude in the normal course of events, however we will see you again next month (August) because Cancer does suck.

Gaslight Theater Numbers

Hi all,

After all the ticket sales and after we gave 8 tickets to Ronald McDonald house, we ended up with a surplus of $1263.00…we also recevied random donations of $500, $85 and $50…for a grand total of $1398.00

Michelle …thank you so much for all your hard work and effort and for taking the lead on this…you are great…and you have a job for life….

The hottest ticket in town.

The time is coming up fast. Have you communicated with Michelle? Is the calender updated with all the correct info? Is there anyone I know who needs tickets? Don’t let yourself, your family , friends or co-workers be left out of the excitement.

Michelle does need to hear from you soon!

And the winner is……

Something to think about – The 1755 Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary defines cancer as:

A virulent swelling, or sore, not to be cured.

Emphasis add by me. Not to be cured! Sometimes we just need to be thankful. The entry is accompanied by this Addison’s Ovid:

As when a cancer on the body finds,
And gradual death from limb to limb proceeds;
So does the [chilness] to each vital part,
Spread by degrees, and creeps into the heart.

I wanted to officially let everyone know what a wonderful time I had while I was on vacation and playing and holding hands with and skipping and having tea parties and just living life to the utmost I could while with my daughter and her beautiful family. There are many good things in life (just ask Conan the Barbarian) but few are more-so than just sharing a smile or the embrace of a trusting child’s hand in yours.

My daughter Sarah and her children.

It was very pretty there and filled with history, art and that big sky expanse which the northern latitudes provide. It was cold (for me) (yes, the kids snickered at me in my many layers) but not unbearable. It was the most colorful shade of gray every day. There was fog and snow, There was a slight sleet and many other beautiful aspects of the weather that have so long be void in my life. It was the tranquil peace of small town America just across the river from the towering fingers into the sky of the ‘Twin Cities”.

Bonus: My luggage arrived with me on both portions of the trip. Winner!

I understand you had a wonderful meeting with Chris’s mother giving a wonderful talk on peg tubes. Wouldn’t you know it; that is the meeting I miss? Go figure. Michelle still has tickets for the Gaslight event. Please contact her with your request and/or order confirmations. The due date is approaching pell-mell. Please communicate your ticket selling results with her as soon as possible. Just a reminder, this event has always been a success for this organization. One we all want to see continue. I look forward to seeing everyone there.

Just an aside: Have you been enjoying the beautiful sun sets we have had the past several weeks? Priceless!

When I was a much younger, I remember that the annual Academy Awards show was a rather big event in my family. We would watch to see a ‘real’ movie star in their fashion glory however that wasn’t the driving event of the evening. It was a real celebration of the motion picture arts and science productions and when a BEST category meant just that. The Best, not the most popular, the most politically correct or the best statement or showcase of a cause. Some aspects I still enjoy. There seems to be a genuine respect of each other and of the talent; just somehow the attendance list has been tilted towards something I don’t really agree with in the past few years. I know nothing ever remains as honest and as special as it once was; just seems that OSCAR has been rather tarnished with the demise of Hollywood. {Yes, that is an opinion}

I would like to take you back to the chill and ambiance of the early years. To nights filled with surprises and respect. When ability and skill were celebrated.  A tribute to a time when the term ‘God given talent’ was not a slur. I want to take you to when the whole world watched in anticipation and with the comfort in heart that the decisions were honest and were delivered POUR LE MÉRITE. The spot lights are lit and race brightly skyward. You are at the edge of your seat with your heart beating in anticipation. Finally the category you have been waiting for has come.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the winner of the BEST is…….

YOU! Yes, you. You are the best and the most precious of individuals. Your performance, your life this year revolving around your fight to be here this evening is recognized for the efforts you have made every day of your life to mean something to someone, to anyone and sometimes only to yourself. Congratulations; you are the most amazing of things. You are a human being with a unique ability to be human even again all odds. We recognize the contribution you bring into this world and we thank you.

For those of us who watch the Oscar evening, I hope you enjoy. Somewhere and somehow, on that evening; place yourself on that stage as the winner and remember to thank all of those who helped you take each step on you journey. We are your support group, we are here, each of us for each of us, to hold by the hand, to speak an encouraging word and see you in your Oscar Sunday finest on that special stage, that evening of celebrating success. Life!

Sort of like the feelings I got upon hugging and embracing my grandchildren.

Please, if anyone has any news, stories or pictures they wish to share with the group,  get them to me. I am more that happy to post anything which is of interest for the group here on the web site. Remember, this is OUR website. Use it, leave comments or pass along suggestions. It is here for us to use.

Don’t forget the meeting coming next month on the 6th day of March and be strong everyone. Be strong for each other because Cancer Sucks!

It’s OK to say a prayer or have a kind thought..

for our brother Frank Frisna. Some of you may have received an e-mail yesterday about his still being in Texas for treatment. He asked for prayers and I feel we would be remiss if we did not take a few moments to ask God for his recovery or have a kind thought in our hearts for his continued well being.

There are many things in this world which try to take us from being concerned for each others well being. (Personally) I believe in the healing ability of taking our concerns to God in prayer. You may believe differently. Therefore, I will state this request this way for the purpose of maximizing our power. Frank has asked and I hope we all will answer him in our own way. Be well my dear friend and heal.

As January comes…

A Christmas tree inside a home.

Image via Wikipedia

… we look forward with hope and excitement as we toil to take down our displays of Christmas and the Holiday Season. While you once again take balls from tree, pack away cardboard candy canes or gather up all the ripped paper and torn ribbons for the delayed trash run; please take a second to pause and give a consideration to the real reason we celebrate a birth that took place over 2000 years ago. I would NEVER, EVER tell you How. That is for you, your family and your personal relationship with providence. I only ask that your would. Just a moment while putting away what you have decorated your home and hearth with. There is a reason we have the day and the time set aside and my hope and desire that all that is truly meant to be is a blessing upon you and yours.

As we came together last night and went around the table, I am always humbled buy our collective resolve. We are a blessed and vibrant group and we are not set asunder by any affliction nor disease nor disparages of condition. Instead, we rejoice in each others victories. We revel in the fight against the odds and simply smile and hug and clap our hands as each of us commemorate the battles past. My Lord, you are all such gentle and loving individuals.

Going around the table, is for me, a glorious affirmation of who we are and how we are determined to live.

Everyone was again blessed with relative good health and seems strong and vigorous. The one exception was our brother Frank who is fighting yet another battle. Our prayers are with you as you go out of town in search of treatment. Our thought will be with you and please let the group know if there is anything we can do beyond or love and support. Best of luck and Godspeed.

On a much happier note, congratulations to Chris on his nuptials. We all wish him bliss in his connubial life.

I will not be with the group in February as I will be in the cold North braving sub-arctic tundra on the first vacation in 7 years. I ask that you all say a prayer or think a kind thought for me during this trip and that I will be safe and return once again into your collective embrace.

The date is April 21st and the time is 6 PM. The place is the GasLight  Theater. The show is the Three Musketeers with the _or_ portion of the title to come.
The tickets are in. Please contact Michelle Schulter either at drschulter (AT) comcast (DOT) net

or through her Facebook page which is LOCATED HERE. Please contact her directly via phone if you have her number. If you need her phone number please contact me or her directly via e-mail and we will get that to you. Look for details soon on the web page about this event. One note to be aware of: the final due date for all monies due on the sale of tickets is the March Meeting. Please keep this hard deadline in mind. Thank you everyone and lets keep this long running successful event a continued fun evening for everyone.

One of the more raucous moments from last night involved one and/or both of these: If you were in attendance you know which item in this picture is germane to the event. If you were not there, well, I leave it to your individual imagination. (See what you may miss when not in attendance?)

Another exciting thing was that we had two first time visitors and guest. While we are saddened by the reason of their visit (an hopefully continue involvement with us) we are always pleased to meet new friends. Please keep them in your prayers or on you minds as they make their journey.

Well, that brings everyone up to date on our January meeting and while I will not be with you all next month in body, I will be with you in spirit as I will no doubt be huddled against the ravages of the environment in an attempt to have a few happy moments with my female issue and her wonderful and beautiful offspring. I know I will be beaming ear to ear the entire time.

Be strong everyone because Cancer most assuredly sucks.

Some changes to the Photo Album

Hello everyone,

I would like to be among the first to wish you all a wonderful and happy Thanksgiving. If you are like me, you could probably spend most of the day just simply giving thanks for all the blessings we enjoy; let alone have time to eat and watch the ball games. My hope, desire and prayer is that we all enjoy the warmth and comfort of family and friends enjoying a day of remembrance, relaxation and (trough-ing). Enjoy your meals everyone. The breaking of bread with one another is a gift.

I added some pictures from the 2006 relay for life event. I am not totally happy with how the album works. If you click on the Relay folder, it will open to a set of pictures. These you can click on to enlarge, browse through and also right click and select to download a copy of the pictures you like. To go back to the original state once you have looked at all the pictures; click on the Photo Album up on the top of the page -> on the tool bar.

I will continue to add pictures and work with making this an easier experience. I know there is a way to allow for comments for each picture. I just have to ‘play’ with this particular plug-in some more. Please bear with me on this. Things my pop up then go away for a period of time. I will get this process smoothed out soon. (I think I just have issues with the pictures for some reason.)

As always, please contact me with any comments and suggestions and I will endeavor to implement as soon as possible.

That’s it for now, enjoy Thanksgiving and your loved ones; and leave just a little room for our Holiday meal at the December Sixth meeting.

Why was there a Newsletter in my e-mail box?

By now, you should have received the notice that (if you have been an attendee of our meetings and signed the roster) you have been added to the group newsletter. I hope this was not a startling event for any of you. I do respect your time and I do not want to burden you with additional ‘spam’. If, you do not wish to receive the Newsletter, please just respond and I will take you off the distribution list. Again, I want to reassure you of our privacy policy and will not distribute your name and e-mail address to anyone for any purpose.

I will make every effort to keep mailing to what is necessary. I do spend a lot of time on the web and I am thinking about a weekly catch up of stories and items which may be of interest to the group. Please leave a comment or let me know if you think it is a good idea. Just a way for me to save you some time or maybe expose you to news you may have missed or simply do not have the time to locate and absorb on your own. Let me know what you think, but I expect to start that shortly.

As to the site; I am working on adding more pictures. I am not sure I like the current plug-in I use for the Photo Album. I am working on this aspect of the site and you may see changes occurring. Please bear with me as I look to make this area more useful and easier to navigate. Do not be alarmed if it goes away or makes some sort of drastic change. It is me making changes or tinkering around with it.

I will be ‘playing’ with the newsletter as well as with this site to continue to improve in and make it a more desirable web destination for us as a group and for persons of interest who stumble upon us or are referred.

As always, I hope everyone is doing good and that you remain strong, as cancer sucks.
